South Lake Tahoe in California, US, has seen the biggest rise in interest among travellers, according to Expedia, with searches up 195% year-on-year. Straddling the California-Nevada border, it is known for dramatic Sierra Nevada scenery and tranquil mountain escapes. In the winter months, you can head to the slopes for skiing and snowboarding, while the warmer months are ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding in the crystal-clear waters of North America’s largest alpine lake.

2. Hyogo, Japan

Japan has even more to offer beyond its better-known cities Tokyo and Kyoto. Hyogo, a prefecture in the Kansai region of Honshu, combines centuries-old heritage with hot springs and a vibrant cuisine. In the historic town of Himeji, you can find one of Japan’s most impressive castles, soak in the hot-spring resort of Arima Onsen after a day of sightseeing, sample seafood specialities and try the famous Kobe beef.

3. Punta del Este, Uruguay

Often associated with luxury yachts, beach clubs and extravagant summer parties, Punta del Este is one of South America’s most glamorous coastal destinations. But there is more to this Uruguayan resort town than its reputation as a playground for the wealthy. The cosmopolitan city is a perfect base to explore the sand dunes of Cabo Polonio, and offers plenty of room to unwind on its many golden beaches, while enjoying fresh seafood and wines from the many waterfront restaurants.

4. Sedona, Arizona, US

Aerial View of Houses Surrounded by Rock Formations Sedona

Sedona’s striking red-rock formations have made it one of Arizona’s most recognisable landscapes, drawing holidaymakers seeking adventure. The viewpoints of the surrounding desert are equally as rewarding, and you can relax at the many world-class spas and yoga retreats, or browse the town’s independent shops and art galleries.

5. Busan, South Korea

The temple in Busan, South Korea

Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city after Seoul, is visibly distinct from the latter’s urban environment. It is home to lively beaches, fish markets and the centuries-old Buddhist temple Haedong Yonggungsa, which overlooks the sea. The colourful hillside neighbourhood of Gamcheon Culture Village is famous for its murals and independent cafes, and you can spend hours shopping at Shinsegae, the world’s largest department store.

6. Holbox, Mexico

Holbox tropical Island in Quintana Roo Mexico

For travellers keen to escape Mexico’s hustle and bustle, the island of Holbox has plenty to offer. Located off the Yucatán Peninsula, this car-free island is the perfect place for swimming, cycling between powdery-white beaches and enjoying the many waterfront restaurants. You can float in bioluminescent waters — when tiny marine organisms make the water appear to glow in the dark — or join excursions to see whale sharks in the day.

7. Perugia, Italy

Todi (Umbria, Italy)

Perugia is a medieval Italian city in the heart of Umbria. Its historic centre is decorated with cobbled lanes, stone archways and grand palaces. You can discover famous artworks at the National Gallery, take a historical tour of the city’s Etruscan heritage, or attend the world-famous Umbria Jazz Festival and EuroChocolate to sample decadent chocolates. Italian food not to miss includes truffles, cured meats and excellent Sagrantino wines.

8. The Tweed, New South Wales, Australia

The Tweed is a region on the northern edge of New South Wales that shares a border with Queensland. It is known for its lush hinterlands, rainforests and volcanic peaks, while the beaches are ideal for water sports, and you can hike in the Wollumbin National Park. The region’s food scene is also attractive, with farm-to-table experiences and a unique experience at the Husk Farm Distillery, Australia’s only sugarcane distillery and the country’s first producer of sugarcane juice rum.

9. Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a picturesque countryside escape that sits on the shores of Lake Ontario. The town is brimming with over 20 award-winning wineries, independent shops, tea rooms and 19th-century buildings. It is also home to the Shaw Festival, which brings theatre performances to the area throughout the year.

10. Chichester, UK

Chichester Cathedral and Gardens

If you’re looking for a getaway that doesn’t require a passport or standing in endless airport queues, Chichester makes an appealing case. With a historic cathedral and the South Downs on its doorstep, the market town is ideal for exploring the quieter side of southern England. Its Roman origins are still visible in the city’s compact layout, while the nearby coast offers sandy beaches and lush wetlands. Its proximity to Goodwood House also makes it an ideal location for those attending horse racing, motor racing or other events at the estate.
