Prepare for Talk Of New York on Ascot’s Champions Day

Jockey in blue silks and helmet riding a dark horse with a number 6 saddlecloth on a green track.

THERE looks to be ante-post value to be had in two other British Champions Day contests, the QEII and the Balmoral Handicap.

Starting with the competitive Group One mile contest (3.20pm), current favourite looks the bet at this stage.

As is often the case at this point in the season, some runners may be feeling the effects of a long campaign.

Charlie Appleby’s colt has enjoyed a quieter season, progressing through the grades, and he now looks every inch a Group One miler.

He’s clearly talented and, while he can be keen, a strong pace looks guaranteed from the Coolmore contingent as they look to make it a test for Constitution River, who drops back to a mile.

That should bring out the best in Talk Of New York and, if he reproduces the late acceleration shown in his recent Newmarket performance, he’ll be hard to beat.

In the finale, the Balmoral Handicap (4.35pm), two runners appeal at the current prices.

The ever-reliable must be considered at 16/1.

He may lack the attractive profile of others, but he’s consistent in these races and returns on the same mark as when finishing second in this contest last year.

His record over Ascot’s straight mile is admirable, making an each-way bet look good value.

is of interest after getting back on track at Goodwood.

He won when finally breaking on terms last time and, if he can do so here, he looks a threat under a penalty.

A price of 16/1 could look big if he exits the stalls on terms.
